Mick Corten sensei (5th Dan) started training in the martial arts at the age of 15 years old. Firstly Judo, then Karate, and then Boxing. Only for several months with each discipline. At the age of 21 years old, recovering from a serious motorcycle accident, he was asked by a friend who he was at college with if he would like to go along to the Wrockwardine Wood Sports Centre where his friend practiced Aikido under the instruction of Shihan Keith Heyward sensei. That was in March 1980 and thereafter, under the auspices of the United Kingdom Aikikai (U.K.A.). Corten sensei went on to attain his Shodan in March 1990 and Nidan in February 1994.
He was later awarded Sandan (3rd Dan) in July 2003 and in March 2008 he was awarded Yondan (4th dan) by Shihan Sensei Gwynne Jones, Principal and Head of the Shin-Gi-Tai Aikido Society.
During the 2013 Shin Gi Tai Summer School at Bury Port near Llanelli, South Wales, sensei Corten was awarded
5th Dan by Sensei Gwynne Jones.
Congratluations to Shihan Gwynne Jones, who during Summer School 2013 was awarded 'Soke' 9th Dan.

Club Instructors
Sensei Martin Sheard - 2nd Dan Black Belt.
Sensei Martin Sheard has been practicing Aikido under the instruction of Sensei Corten for many years. Joined the club at the prison dojo in 1988.
Been with the club at various locations over the years.
Attended Summer School at Bury Port in 2007 and was awarded 1st Dan certificate at same, awarded by Sensei Gwynne Jones.
Attended coaching course in Cardiff in November 2012 (organised by BAB) and achieved level one instructors rating.
I particularly enjoy weapons training and proud of the fact that I know the Japanese terms for many of those techniques.
Additionally, I would add that Aikido has helped me to remain mentally stable, philosophical and focused through many difficult periods of my life, which
is testament to the benefits to any individual who choses to make Aikido part of their lives.
